Polls to 234 municipalities on Dec 30
Dhaka: The first-ever municipality elections under political party banners in the country’s history will be held on December 30. Voting will be held in a total of 234 out of 323 municipalities across the country.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the schedule of the countrywide municipal elections in a press conference at the Media Centre of the EC Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon. According to the schedule, the last day for the submission of nomination papers is December 3 while the dates for the scrutiny are December 5 and 6, and the deadlines for the withdrawal of candidature is December 13.
There are a total of 2,952 wards and 738 reserved ward in 234 municipalities whereas the number of possible poll centers is 3,582. A total of 7162396 voters, with women nearly equaling men, are likely to cast ballot in these municipalities. Of the voters, 3,586,356 are male voters and 3,576,040 are female.
Earlier on November 19, the parliament passed the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Bill 2015, which makes way for mayoral aspirants to participate in the polls under political party’s banner.
