A Dhaka court has sentenced Viqarunnisa Noon School and College teacher Parimal Joydhar to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping one of his students.
On Wednesday, Saleuddin Ahmed, judge of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4, handed down the verdict. The convict was also fined Tk 50,000, with the court ruling that he would have to serve six more months in prison for failure to pay the fine.
Parimal was present in the courtroom when the verdict was pronounced. He told that he had secured the position of a magistrate in the 29th BCS examination and the verdict had now ruined his life.
Claiming himself innocent, he said the prosecution could not prove any of the charges brought against him. On November 10, the court heard concluding arguments of both sides and set November 25 for pronouncement of the verdict. A total of 28 witnesses out of 37 has testified in the case.
On July 5, 2011, the father of a tenth-grader at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College’s Bashundhara branch lodged the case against Parimal, accusing him of raping the girl. Police detained Parimal from the house of his wife’s elder sister in Dhaka’s Keraniganj on July 6.
Mahbubey Khoda, an inspector of the Detective Branch, submitted the charge sheet on November 28, 2011. He also recommended withdrawing Lutfor Rahman, head of the institution’s Bashundhara branch, and Principal Hosne Ara Begum in the charge sheet.
