48 militant suspects held on 2nd day crackdown

Police have detained as many as 2,132 people, including 48 suspected militants, from different parts of the country in the last 24 hours till this morning, on the second day of the ongoing countrywide special crackdown, reports the BSS.


AKM Quamrul Ahsan, public relation officer of police headquarters, told that the total number of detainees, after the two-day drive, rose to 5,314 including 85 members of different militant organizations. Earlier, a total 3,192 persons, including 37 militants, were arrested yesterday, the first day of the drive.


Against the backdrop of frequent targeted killings, especially the gruesome murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of police super Babul Akter in Chittagong, the police headquarters on Thursday in a meeting decided to launch the hunt. Senior police officials were present in the meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque was in the chair.


Of the arrestees, 47 were suspected members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and an operative of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The rest 2,084 are mostly accused and wanted in criminal cases, he said. There were arrest warrants on 1,496 of them. Besides, 156 are accused in regular cases, 41 are in illegal firearms-related cases and 391 are accused in narcotics related cases.


Police also recovered two shooter-guns, one bullet, 500 grams of gunpowder, 17 crude bombs, two rifle cartridges, nine machetes and huge jihadi books and also seized 681 motorbike from the arrestees, he added.
