Voting began at 234 municipalities across the country on Wednesday morning amid a sense of apprehension.
Voters began casting their votes at 08:00am and voting will continue till 04:00pm without any interruption. A total of 70,99,144 voters – 35,52,284 males and 35,86,860 females – are expected to vote in the elections. 66,768 officials will oversee voting.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Tuesday warned that no anomalies would be entertained during the polls. He told reporters the Election Commission would not tolerate any laxity, irregularity or partiality.
“I am ordering election officials and law enforcement officials to discharge their duties neutrally and as per the law,” he said. Sirajul Islam, secretary of the Election Commission, asserted that the elections would be peaceful. He told on Tuesday night voters would cast their votes in a peaceful atmosphere. “I have talked to many municipality officials and they said they were no apprehensive of any violence,” added Sirajul.
